A Note From Our Founder You may know that there are many great organizations out there focusing on cancer research and on finding a cure. But what you might not know is that at the Children’s Cancer Association (CCA), we’re different. We’re not a chapter organization or the franchise of a national model. We’re a local organization, one that started around my kitchen table, 21 years ago, after my oldest daughter Alexandra died at age 5 ½. At CCA, we believe kids deserve long wonderful lives. Or at the very least, short wonderful lives. We know for certain, that for seriously ill children and their families, every moment is precious. So we focus on those moments, and how we can transform them with music, friendship, play, and resources – or quite simply, with JOY. JOY is in our DNA. It’s reflected on our balance sheets, in our business model, in our prescriptive programs, and in everything we do. And that’s pretty different. In fact, CCA is the only organization that is working to position JOY as best practice in pediatric healthcare settings across the nation and one day, around the world. CCA has been a labor of love for over 20 years. We are single-mindedly dedicated to providing kids with the most powerful joy experiences in the world. This extraordinary group of CCA Heroes is honored before their friends and family at our annual Celebration of Courage, generously hosted by OMSI and emceed by FOX 12 anchor, Wayne Garcia. Donor contributions are the lifeblood of our organization; CCA receives no federal or state funding. For every dollar spent in FY16, 74 cents went directly to CCA programs. In FY16, CCA continued to invest in organizational best practices and building a strong infrastructure to fuel sustainable program growth, deepen mission impact, and expand service delivery. Expenses allocated to programs once again far exceeded the BBB Charity Accountability Standard requirements that a charity spend at least 65% of its total expenses on program activities.

The 7th annual Children’s Pro-Am, led by CCA Board Member Grant Hammersley, raised over $230,000 this year! Participants in Bridge City Paddling’s annual Dawn to Dusk Benefit raised more than $45,000 for CCA by paddling dragon boats for 12 straight hours on the Willamette River.

Welcome to the Wonderball! This year’s annual gala celebrated CCA’s 20th Birthday Party in style: complete with party hats, cake, New Orleans’ legendary PresHall Brass Band and the Rose City Rollers. Over 800 guests raised $1.1M to help CCA prescribe joy to seriously ill kids and teens.
Valentine’s Day for CCA, our annual on-air fundraiser, raised an incredible $742,000 for our programs of JoyRx. With generous support from our partners at FOX 12 and 105.1 The BUZZ (left, top), listeners and viewers were introduced to a few of our CCA-served kids and families and their incredible stories of joy, triumph, and courage.
MyMusicRx Event Spotlight
On February 19, 2016, with generous support from Converse, MyMusicRx proudly launched bedside service at Boston Children’s Hospital, the #1 ranked pediatric hospital in the nation. Launch day celebrations included performances from progressive folk trio Honeysuckle and GRAMMY nominated, two-time Parents Choice Gold Medal Winner Alastiar Moock. Moock’s daughter Clio who was treated at Boston Children’s Hospital/The Jimmy Fund for leukemia from 2012-2014 (she is doing fine now). As of April 30th MyMusicRx has delivered joyful music medicine experiences to more than 500 kids in Boston. Board members Ron and Lynn Penner-Ash generously hosted not one, not two, but three amazing benefits for MyMusicRx this past summer at their beautiful winery in Newberg, Oregon. These included an intimate wine blending experience, a sold-out dinner featuring Top Chefs Mei Lin, Doug Adams, and Gregory Gourdet as part of the International Pinot Noir Celebration, and a sunset concert from renowned musicians Bela Fleck and Abigail Washburn. Thank you Ron and Lynn!
On March 17, 2016, MyMusicRx, The FADER and Converse were proud to entertain hundreds of local moms, dads, and kids during the popular SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX. Our 4th Annual You Who Rock Show for Kids featured a craft zone, giant owl mascots, breakfast tacos from Bon Appetit, and amazing live music from bands like Taco Cat, Cody Chesnutt, and Thao and The Get Down Stay Down. Special thanks to AirJamz, Reverend Guitars, and especially #ToyotaGiving for their incredible $50,000 donation to MyMusicRx.
Thirty craft food/beverage businesses across 62 locations in 10 states joined forces on Valentine’s Day 2016 to donate a percentage of their sales to fuel MyMusicRx program growth. Led by Stumptown Coffee Roasters, participating businesses like Voodoo Donuts (above left), The Country Cat Dinner House (above right), and Rudy’s Barbershop raised more than $25,000. 7
MyMusicRxÂŽ Two decades ago CCA began delivering the healing power of music to the bedsides of children and teens facing cancer and other serious illnesses. Today, our trained specialists engage hospitalized children of all ages and diagnoses, playing music for and with them to reduce stress, anxiety, and perception of pain. MyMusicRx teams utilize state-of-the-art music carts stocked with teachingquality instruments for kids to explore, and iPads loaded with music games and apps. The program extends online at MyMusicRx.org, with exclusive artist greetings, concerts, music lessons, and curated content from across the web. Live, in-hospital concerts from national recording artists complete the MyMusicRx experience. Since 1995, MyMusicRx has served nearly 150,000 children, families, caregivers, and medical professionals. Our digital programs are available daily to 7,500 kids and teens in 25 pediatric hospitals across the country and growing.

Chemo Pal® Mentor Program CCA’s award-winning Chemo-Pal Mentor program gives kids a caring, trusted, adult friend to look forward to during treatments, and someone in their corner when they need it most. Our mentors play games, listen to music, share hobbies, or simply offer the comfort of companionship, relieving the anxiety, loneliness and isolation experienced by children in treatment. A Chemo Pal mentor can also give parents a much-needed break to grab a cup of coffee, talk with doctors, or spend time with their other children. Each year, CCA delivers the joy of friendship to approximately 240 Pacific Northwest children and teens. CCA Chemo Pal mentors are carefully screened, trained, and thoughtfully matched with families, including those with bilingual needs. Chemo Pal mentors and kids spend about 4 hours per month together, both in hospital and out in the community enjoying activities like sporting events, concerts, and craft and gaming nights. The average match lasts 12 months, or for the duration of a child’s treatment. CCA provides ongoing support and education for our frontline volunteers.

Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin™ The Alexandra Ellis Caring Cabin provides children and teens that are in treatment, along with their families, an extraordinary place to retreat, relax, and create once-in-a-lifetime memories outside of the hospital environment. Nestled in 24 acres of surrounding woods with plentiful wildlife and a serene lake, the Caring Cabin provides an essential health connection to nature and healing. About 40 friends and family members visit CCA’s beautiful Caring Cabin hideaway on the Oregon Coast in a typical month. This free adventure helps restore the energy and hope kids need to battle their illness over the long haul. CCA’s Caring Cabin was built in 2006 with the love and dedication of friends, foundations, and businesses that donated nearly one million dollars in cash, goods and services, and even the land itself. Over 4,000 family members have visited since we first opened the Caring Cabin’s doors.

Link CCA’s Link program takes the profound emotional and financial hardships of a pediatric illness diagnosis head on, engaging a network of caring people and organizations to provide families with essential needs assistance and support. Some of that assistance has included bathroom renovations for wheelchair accessibility; gas cards, new tires, and car repairs to safely transport families to medical treatments; new roofs, furnaces, and hot water heaters; holiday gift support; and special wishes not met by other organizations. Link provides essential resources and tailored support to nearly 1,000 Pacific Northwest children and their family members annually. Since Link’s inception in 1999, we’ve had the privilege of delivering joy to nearly 8,000 individuals, more than 14,000 times.

Two-year-old, Aayan, and his mom, Modinat, spent last December in a Portland hospital while Aayan recovered from a bone marrow transplant. Thanks to a generous donor, our Link program was able to fly Aayan’s dad and two siblings to be at his bedside just in time for Christmas.
